When family and friends come to Ithaca, there are a few staples we always visit. There is the campus tour, the gorges, the Farmer’s Market, the parks and the restaurants. But then there’s Purity Ice Cream. Purity has been churning out its own ice cream in this shop for over 70 years. They have a lot of unique flavors like Finger Lakes Tourist & Moose Tracks. But do yourself a favor and order one of their three flavors with shavings of bittersweet chocolate. (Bittersweet, Chocolate Bittersweet or Mint Chip). Although Rachel votes for Madigan Mint.
This blog is starting to sound like a Lonely Planet tour guide.
We’ve been working on the new Cinemapolis movie theater in Ithaca for the last 5 months and on June 12th it opened its doors to the public. To open a non-profit independent film theater at a time like this is an ambitious project and a gamble for city development. But the new theater looks fantastic and it has immediately established itself as one of Ithaca’s new great artistic and creative homes. If the crowd from opening night is any indication, the gamble on this project will pay off.
Despite everything that a home theater, downloadable movies and popcorn on your sofa can offer, there is something about going to the movies that’s irreplaceable. And no matter how hard I try, I can never get my popcorn to taste as good as the kernels from Cinemapolis. Congratulations to Lynne, Rich and the rest of the Cinemampolis family.

There are several swimming holes and hikes along six mile creek in Ithaca, but flatrock is an area near the Cornell Plantations with shallow water for dogs, kids and warm water. A few pictures from our visit, including a now 5 months pregnant Rachel.
A few pictures from my trip to the island for a friend’s bachelor party two weeks ago. Our tour guide, Sexy Rexy, is the subject in a few pictures. The black and white photo of the man in a tree was “Birdman.” He jumped from the tree into the ocean…a drop of at least 120 feet.
